Habitat for Humanity of Michigan Announces 2024 AIM Conference Award Winners
LANSING, MI – September 24, 2024: Habitat for Humanity of Michigan is proud to announce the winners of its annual awards, presented at the 2024 Affiliates in Motion (AIM) Conference. These awards recognize outstanding achievements and contributions to the Habitat for Humanity mission in Michigan.
Affiliate of the Year: Cheboygan County Habitat for Humanity
Cheboygan County Habitat for Humanity has been named the 2024 Affiliate of the Year, marking a significant milestone in their 30-year history. This award recognizes their exceptional growth and impact, including:
- Constructing two new energy-efficient homes, doubling their previous output
- Increasing home repair projects from 6 to 9, addressing critical needs in the community
- Expanding their team with three full-time positions to support increased capacity
- Launching an Endowment Fund for their Homeownership Program
- Securing their largest grant to date from Habitat for Humanity International
“As we celebrate 30 years as a Habitat for Humanity affiliate, we have had one of our most significant years yet,” said Mandy Martin, Executive Director for Cheboygan County Habitat for Humanity. “For the first time in 30 years, we have been in a spot even to be considered for the Affiliate of the Year award. We have grown our capacity to serve, including raising a significant amount more in contributions and grants, and served more families in a single year than any other year. We are so honored to be receiving this award.”
ReStore of the Year: Habitat for Humanity Grand Traverse Region
The ReStore operated by Habitat for Humanity Grand Traverse Region has been honored as the 2024 ReStore of the Year. Key achievements include:
- Record-high revenue in 2023, five years after moving to a new, more visible location
- Successful completion of the “ReLight the ReStore” campaign, upgrading to energy-efficient LED lighting
- Partnerships with local organizations for community engagement and team-building opportunities
- Introduction of new product lines, including Ashley Furniture and recycled paint
- Hosting community events such as blood drives and recycling campaigns
Wendy Irvin, CEO of Habitat for Humanity Grand Traverse Region, stated: “This ReStore of the Year award recognizes our team’s dedication and our community’s support. We’ve transformed our ReStore into a hub of sustainability and affordability, constantly innovating to better serve our region. This honor fuels our commitment to funding our mission while being a valuable community resource.”
Homeowner of the Year: Donyelle Till, Habitat for Humanity Detroit
Donyelle Till, a homeowner with Habitat for Humanity Detroit since 2009, has been named the 2024 Homeowner of the Year. This award celebrates her outstanding contributions to her community, including:
- Welcoming and supporting new Habitat homeowners in the Morningside neighborhood
- Serving on the Morningside Association election board
- Participating in neighborhood clean-ups and community events
- Speaking at Habitat Home Dedications to inspire new homeowners
- Motivating program participants to overcome obstacles
Stephanie Osterland, CEO of Habitat for Humanity Detroit, commented on Donyelle Till’s award: “Donyelle embodies the spirit of community that Habitat Detroit strives to build. Since becoming a homeowner in 2009, she has tirelessly given back to her Morningside neighborhood. Her dedication to welcoming new homeowners, participating in community initiatives, and inspiring others makes her a true ambassador for Habitat’s mission. Donyelle’s journey shows how homeownership can transform not just a family, but an entire community.”
The AIM Conference, held annually, brings together Habitat for Humanity affiliates from across Michigan to share best practices, celebrate achievements, and plan for the future of affordable housing in the state.
