Consumers Energy: Powering Habitat for Humanity’s Mission Across Michigan
At Habitat for Humanity of Michigan, we’re fortunate to have incredible partners who share our vision of a world where everyone has a decent place to live. Among these partners, Consumers Energy stands out as a shining example of support, fueling our mission through various initiatives and programs across the state.
A Multifaceted Partnership
Consumers Energy’s support for Habitat for Humanity is both comprehensive and far-reaching. Each year, Habitat for Humanity of Michigan receives grants from Consumers Energy that bolster our core programs. These grants enable us to:
- Offer critical home repair programs, ensuring existing homes remain safe and habitable.
- Implement energy efficiency upgrades, reducing utility costs for homeowners and promoting sustainable living.
- Launch successful fundraising campaigns through matching grants, amplifying the impact of individual donations.
But Consumers Energy’s support doesn’t stop at the state level. They also provide direct assistance to local Habitats throughout Michigan, independent of the programs offered through Habitat Michigan. This localized approach ensures that specific community needs are met effectively.
Empowering Employee Volunteerism
One of the most inspiring aspects of Consumers Energy’s partnership is their commitment to encouraging employee volunteerism. The company not only supports Habitat financially but also fosters a culture of giving back among its workforce. Many Consumers Energy employees dedicate their time and skills to Habitat projects, bringing our mission to life through hands-on involvement.
Two recent stories highlight the impact of this volunteer engagement:
Helping the Helpers: Patrick Ebnit’s Habitat Journey
Patrick Ebnit, a Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Champion at Consumers Energy, exemplifies the spirit of volunteerism. With a 30-year history of involvement with Habitat for Humanity, Ebnit’s passion for the cause is evident.
Ebnit’s journey with Habitat began in California in the 1990s and continued when he moved to Michigan. His expertise in masonry has been invaluable, as demonstrated when he laid the foundation for a Habitat home in Gratiot County. Years later, Ebnit had the opportunity to visit the family living in that very home, witnessing firsthand the long-term impact of his efforts.
“They took the hand that was offered to them and used it to improve their life,” Ebnit reflected. “That made me feel really good about the efforts and time I spent.”
Ebnit emphasizes that everyone can contribute, regardless of their skill level. “Come on out, I’ll teach you how to run a saw. There is always time to learn,” he encourages. “If you think you can’t be of use, you’re wrong and you can learn along the way.”
Ebnit leverages Consumers Energy’s employee programs to maximize his impact. By logging his volunteer hours and utilizing the company’s matching grant program for donations, he ensures that his contributions go even further in supporting Habitat’s mission.
Rocking the Block with Bob Balzer
Another shining example of Consumers Energy’s commitment to Habitat is Bob Balzer, a Community Affairs Manager who has been coordinating volunteer efforts for Midland County Habitat for Humanity’s Rock the Block program for three years.
Rock the Block is a neighborhood revitalization initiative that focuses on exterior home improvements and critical repairs. Balzer and his team of Consumers Energy volunteers tackle a wide range of projects, from yard maintenance and lighting improvements to building walls, framing homes, and even roofing.
“I love the physical aspect of this volunteer effort,” Balzer shares. “Getting my hands dirty while working side-by-side with fellow Consumers Energy employees is incredibly fun and rewarding!”
Balzer emphasizes the inclusive nature of these volunteer opportunities. “One of the things I love about our volunteer day is that there is something almost anyone can do,” he explains. “Whether it’s cleaning a flower bed, washing a window, painting a fence, or roofing an entire home, volunteers can work at their comfort level and at their own pace.”
The impact of these efforts is profound. As Balzer notes, “Once projects are completed, it is so rewarding to see the joy, pride, and appreciation expressed by the families who benefitted from the service of Habitat and the many people who volunteer with the organization.”
A Shared Commitment to Community
The partnership between Habitat for Humanity of Michigan and Consumers Energy exemplifies the power of collaboration in addressing critical housing needs. Through financial support, employee volunteerism, and a shared commitment to building stronger communities, we are making a tangible difference in the lives of families across Michigan.
As we continue to work towards our vision of a world where everyone has a decent place to live, we are grateful for partners like Consumers Energy who share our passion and dedication. Together, we are not just building houses; we are building hope, stability, and brighter futures for families throughout our state.
