Habitat for Humanity of Michigan receives $87,500 from SpartanNash Foundation as a result of companywide effort to build homes

Funds raised Feb. 7-18 will go to Michigan Habitat for Humanity organizations

As a result of Habitat for Humanity of Michigan’s partnership with the SpartanNash Foundation, the organization today received an $87,500 donation to help build hope and affordable housing.

Between Feb. 7 and 18, the SpartanNash Foundation hosted a companywide retail scan campaign in participating SpartanNash corporate-owned stores in eight states. Store guests and company associates who visited the stores during the 12-day retail scan campaign had the opportunity to donate $1, $5 or $10, with 100 percent of dollars raised going to 34 local Habitat organizations throughout Michigan.

“Thanks to the generosity of SpartanNash store patrons, more families all over Michigan will have access to safe, affordable, healthy housing,” said Sandy Pearson, President and CEO of Habitat for Humanity of Michigan. “Having a home is the key to unlocking a stable future for so many people struggling to provide for themselves and their families. Each donation individually may seem small, but together the impact is powerful.”

Habitat for Humanity’s vision is to build a world where everyone has a decent place to live. The organization is dedicated to eliminating substandard housing locally and worldwide through constructing, rehabilitating and preserving homes; by advocating for fair and just housing policies; and by providing training and access to resources to help families improve their shelter conditions.

Habitat homebuyers invest 300-500 hours of sweat equity into homebuilding and mentorship classes, where they learn the responsibilities and criteria to maintain the Habitat home they purchase on a zero-percent interest rate.

In total, the SpartanNash Foundation’s retail scan campaign to build hope and affordable housing raised $176,700 on behalf of more than 50 local Habitats in the communities it serves. Since 2006, nearly $1.7 million has been raised by SpartanNash and the SpartanNash Foundation to support local Habitats and hardworking homebuyers.

SpartanNash underwrote the cost of the fundraising campaign so that all donations will benefit Habitat for Humanity and hardworking homebuyers in communities all over Michigan.

“The SpartanNash Foundation has a long history of supporting Habitat for Humanity, and we are proud to continue that tradition with this year’s retail scan to build hope and affordable housing,” said Meredith Gremel, vice president of corporate affairs and communications and executive director of the SpartanNash Foundation. “The generosity of our store guests during this fundraising campaign was incredible. We are most grateful to all who joined forces with the SpartanNash Foundation and our associates to support this worthy cause.”

The retail scan campaign to secure shelter is the first of four fundraising campaigns the SpartanNash Foundation will execute in 2018. Upcoming scans will raise funds and awareness for Special Olympics (May 2-13), patriotic partners (June 27-July 8) and community food pantries (Oct. 24-Nov. 4).

SpartanNash is the fifth largest food distributor in the United States and a leading distributor of grocery products to U.S. military commissaries. The Fortune 350 company currently operates 143 supermarkets, primarily under the banners of Family Fare Supermarkets, D&W Fresh Market, VG’s Grocery, Dan’s Supermarket and Family Fresh Market.
