Prison Build Program

The Prison Build program administered by Habitat for Humanity of Michigan as a value–add program for Habitat affiliates is actually a collaborative effort of four significant partners.

Michigan Department of Corrections’ involvement serves as a means to provide meaningful and application skills training to inmates so as to influence their lives upon their release.

The Michigan State Housing Development Authority financially supports the material acquisition for the program as a unique way to increase the amount and availability of affordable housing in Michigan.

The local Habitat affiliates across Michigan participate in this meaningful partnership to acquire high quality walls, cabinets, counter tops, sheds and horticulture products for their housing projects while they are saving money and time.

Currently, discussions are taking place to possibly involve a fifth partner in 2010.  The Michigan Army National Guard would use delivery of the wall panels as a way for their truck and equipment operators to apply skills in a hand on environment.

The Prison Build Program educates and provides hands-on training to inmates in the building trades and horticulture industries. The inmates construct walls, cabinets and other housing components, as well as provide horticulture products to Habitat affiliates.

These products help affiliates build homes faster, cheaper, and to use volunteers in a new way. Michigan’s Prison Build Program has assisted in the building of more than 2,000 Habitat homes.
