HFHM Receives $25,000 from State Farm for Statewide Financial Capability Effort

Lansing, Mich. –Habitat for Humanity of Michigan (Habitat Michigan) today announced that State Farm is contributing $25,000 to support its Housing Counseling and Financial Education program.

“When people think of Habitat for Humanity, they think most often of building new houses,” stated Sandy Pearson, President and CEO of Habitat for Humanity of Michigan. “There are many steps that take place before the home is built. How can we responsibly build homes if we do not have people who are financially ready to purchase them? Our Financial Education network helps families create realistic goals and achievable plans around their finances so they are in the best place possible before taking the next step of purchasing a home.”

Pearson joined State Farm Agent Jennifer Blumer to receive the contribution. Also in attendance were Senator Rick Jones and Lansing area State Farm agents Stacy Lewis and Steve Stagg.

“Strong neighborhoods are the foundation of a strong society, and that’s why State Farm is committed to maintaining the vibrancy of our communities by assisting nonprofits like Habitat for Humanity of Michigan that support affordable housing, first time homeowners, community revitalization, and economic development,” said Lansing State Farm Agent Jennifer Blumer.

Many Michigan Habitat Affiliates have been providing housing counseling and financial education as a part of their housing programs for several years; some programs have been operating nearly 10 years. Habitat Michigan has been coordinating the provision of the Statewide Counseling and Education program since 2015, which includes 5 Habitat for Humanity Affiliates in Saginaw, Genesee, Oakland, Monroe and Washtenaw Counties, as well as the State Support Organization in Lansing. Housing Counseling and Financial Education is now available to residents in all Michigan counties. This year, services have been provided in 24 counties with the intention to expand to all 83 counties. Consumers who attend HUD approved financial education classes are also offered the opportunity to work individually with a Counselor / Coach to pursue their individual financial stability and housing related goals. Habitat for Humanity aspires to work with all Michigan consumers who wish to increase the financial capabilities available to them.
