Position Description:

The Development Director provides vision and leadership in cultivating financial resources that enable HFHM and Habitat affiliates to affect the elimination of poverty housing in Michigan.This position works to strategically maximize fundraising, relationships, and engagement opportunities with government, business, grant acquisition, special events, and individual donors in support of the Habitat mission. Stewardship of the ongoing Rebuild Michigan Campaign and the transition to the development of a State Major Gifts Program will be top priorities. Mentoring, educating, and training affiliates in individual, philanthropic, foundation and corporate giving may require considerable travel.


Position Responsibilities:


  • Cultivation and stewardship of current donor and sponsorship programs including the ReBuild Michigan Campaign, State Major Gifts, and other ongoing strategies and partnerships
  • Work with the CEO, Corporate Campaign Cabinet, Habitat affiliates, and Habitat for Humanity International (HFHI) to develop individualized programs at all Habitat levels
  • Develop compelling written materials to create programs and strategies for recruiting new individual and institutional donors that will increase funding resources to meet financial goals
  • Foster and maintain positive, professional relationships with affiliate executive directors, resource development leaders, and other staff and volunteers
  • Provide development leadership, training, and mentorship to Habitat affiliates and staff at annual statewide conferences, regional meetings, and individual one-on-one consultations
  • Remain current on best practices in strategic individual, philanthropic, foundation, organization, and corporate support
  • Oversee and monitor the creation of a development department including recruitment, engagement, and management of additional staff as required
  • Secure self-supporting financial resources to fund the HFHM Development Department
  • Work to increase Habitat donor interest at the local, state, national, and international levels
  • Complete reporting requirements and compliance tasks as required and requested by CEO
  • Increase general awareness and support of the Habitat for Humanity mission and ministry
  • Work with and report to the HFHM Board of Directors, ReBuild Michigan Campaign Cabinet, and the Corporate Partnership Council



General Qualifications:


  • Self-directed with strong organizational and time management skills
  • History of effective professional fundraising experience
  • Proven experience in planning and managing development relations program
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to work as a leader and as a part of a team
  • College degree in related field and a minimum of 5 years’ experience preferred
  • Experience with Habitat for Humanity a plus
  • Knowledge and proficiency with Microsoft Office products
  • Proficient with Salesforce or Constituent Relationship Management systems
