AmeriCorps Week is a time when we celebrate the impact and accomplishments of AmeriCorps members and programs across the country. Since 1994, the first year of AmeriCorps’ existence, over 1 million members have served with AmeriCorps to improve their local communities by improving access to basic needs like healthcare, housing, and education.
At Habitat Michigan, we have seen members serve with Habitat for Humanity affiliates and other community partner agencies across the state since 2004; after the current program year, over 400 service terms will have been completed just by AmeriCorps*State members. These members have done it all: community outreach to inform more people about opportunities through Habitat, assistance and leadership on construction sites, recruitment and education of homeowners about the Habitat model and the ins and outs of homeownership, and recruitment and management of volunteers to assist in the production of safe, affordable, decent homes.
Since 2014, our members have served 2,345 individuals through housing services—moving individuals into new or rehabbed homes, providing critical repairs and weatherization, and/or replacing major appliances—that have allowed these individuals to achieve their dream of homeownership or make their homes a better place to live. We look forward to the amazing things our members will do for their communities in the future as our AmeriCorps program continues to grow.
