Sustainable Housing Director
Thom Phillips is the Sustainable Housing Director with Habitat for Humanity of Michigan. He works closely with Habitat affiliates throughout the state, providing construction resources and support through consulting, education and training on new home design and construction, accessibility, rehabilitations, repairs, weatherization and preservation. Healthy, durable and energy-efficient homes are confirmed through certification in ENERGY STAR® and other green building programs.
A licensed residential builder in Michigan since 1988, Thom is certified as both a HERS (Home Energy Rating System) rater and a BPI (Building Performance Institute) Building Analyst. He received a Bachelor’s Degree in Environmental Studies and General Business from Western Michigan University in 1979 and a secondary teaching certificate in 1983. Prior to his work with Habitat, he owned Cascade Building & Design in Portage, Michigan.
His hobbies include playing drums and guitar, biking, hiking, traveling, cooking, maple sugaring and homebrewing. He has been married to his wife Lane since 1988 and has three crazy cats.
